Overview

Mourgrim is the direct barbarian and berserker of the Chaos core: brutal, physical, aggressive, and culturally close to the northern-warrior archetype. His ferocity is explosive, but his presence is not comic, loud, or stupid. He carries oppressive physical weight and executioner-like menace, advancing with the implacable certainty of something terrible that has decided where it is going and made stopping it everyone else’s problem.

Mourgrim is not immortal. Killing him is tedious. He survives and continues fighting through wounds that should incapacitate or kill an ordinary warrior, and ordinary lethal force does not reliably stop him. Defeating him requires repeated, overwhelming effort.

Established Characterization

Mourgrim combines immense berserker ferocity, warrior brutality, explosive aggression, and a supernatural refusal to die with relentless forward motion and an oppressive, executioner-like presence. He does not advance through leadership, intrigue, scholarship, or ritual sophistication. He repeatedly overcomes the Chaos proving trials because he is exceptionally difficult to stop and extremely effective at direct violence.

In the later Raven Host command he is not primarily an officer. He is the most notable front-line Marauder and shock warrior under Rehlos, and few warriors from the early trials survive long enough or perform well enough to rival his reputation. He has little interest in command; Rehlos pointing him toward something that needs killing is a structure that suits him.

Relationships

  • Rehlos - later field commander. Mourgrim accepts the simple practicality of being directed toward a target worth killing.
  • Craeven - principal Magus and adviser within the later command; Mourgrim is useful to his plans but is not defined by Craeven’s intellectual games.
  • Carsybe - principal Zealot and religious authority within the later command.
