WAR Game History
These notes describe WAR’s development and systems. They help interpret what the game represents, but do not automatically establish character-canon events.
Careers
WAR ultimately had 24 careers, four per playable race. It launched with 20. Knight of the Blazing Sun and Black Guard were added shortly after launch; Slayer and Choppa followed later. The planned Dwarf melee damage career, Hammerer, was abandoned in favor of the more iconic Slayer.
Skaven later appeared as temporary controllable roles in RvR. They were not added as a normal seventh playable race with permanent level-one characters and a full career roster.
PvE and RvR
WAR had a genuine PvE endgame as well as RvR. High-end PvE included Bastion Stair, city dungeons, Lost Vale, Land of the Dead, and Tomb of the Vulture Lord. The original overall PvE progression culminated in King encounters unlocked through the RvR city campaign. Before patch 1.3.5, the King remained the formal PvE capstone after Land of the Dead was introduced.
Patch 1.3.5 removed the separate PvE King apex and redesigned city sieges around RvR, folding King participation into the competitive city battle.
Land of the Dead
Land of the Dead arrived in 2009 as an RvR-gated PvE region, drawing partly on the structure of Dark Age of Camelot’s Darkness Falls. Its major PvE content included Tomb Kings material and the Tomb of the Vulture Lord. Its introduction did not replace the King encounter as the PvE apex before patch 1.3.5.
